Ten months!
Today Oz is ten months old!
The last month has been busy in Oz land. He was sick for most of October and November, so he’s been making up for lost time. He’s perfected his crawling and moved on to pulling up on furniture. He’s started to figure out climbing. At Monster Palace the other day, Chase showed him how to climb stairs. Fortunately, he hasn’t found the ones in our house yet. He regularly climbs up onto the back of the couch and over his parents.
Food has become interesting. Oz went from zero to yogurt to ALL THE THINGS in a very short period of time. Last night, he ate some chicken and sweet potato and then chowed down on a ton of broccoli. Yogurt is still a favorite food, with toast, cheese and broccoli coming close behind. We’re learning that it takes a few tries before he enjoys a food — he’s still learning about bananas, for example. While he doesn’t have any teeth yet, he manages just fine. The teeth are lurking under the gums — I keep expecting them any day now.
Oz has an insatiable curiosity, like most babies his age. It’s difficult to prevent him from doing the things he wants to do or getting into the things he wants to get into. And the rules about which we’re the most strict are the ones he most wants to violate (surprise, surprise): he’s not supposed to bother the dog or play with electrical cords or play in the animals’ water dish, and he IS supposed to lie down on the changing table. He shrieks when thwarted, but he’s going to have to learn to live with that.
He’s beginning to make word-like noises. He regularly says, “Da!” when attempting to bother Mollydog. “Mamamamamama” is a frequent sound. The other day, Amariah was playing with his toes and saying, “Toes!” when he said, “T-T-T!”
Oscar took his first ride in the bike trailer with his helmet. He does NOT enjoy it. We’ll probably wait until it’s a little warmer outside before trying again — the cold seemed to make wearing a stupid heavy thing on his head a bit harder.
He is a cheerful baby, generally, and he has a great sense of humor. When he’s tired, he gets silly and more prone to giggles. His favorite sleepy game is to lean over and (gently) bite Mamama’s nose, which causes us both to dissolve in giggles. He is also cautious in new situations. This month, we went to the Kennedy School soaking pool (a warm, shallow pool) for the first time. It took Oz a good fifteen or twenty minutes to relax enough to let go of Mama, but once he did, it was all fun from there, splashing and blowing bubbles.
Oz continues to frustrate and delight us — generally simultaneously, as when he pulls up on our legs and blows raspberries at us when we’re trying to cook in the kitchen, or crawls toward a forbidden thing, laughing the whole way. He is a wonder and a joy. Happy Ten Months, Oscar.
